Wales’ average childcare costs lower than UK average, but there are too few places

Coram Family and Childcare (formerly Family and Childcare Trust), have produced their annual survey of childcare costs.

They found that costs in Wales rose 2%. This puts the average cost of a part time nursery place at £117 per week.

This is lower than the British average of £127 per week, but the report found that there were other issues in Wales.

According to Coram Family and Childcare “less than half of local areas in Wales have enough childcare places for parents working full time.”

There are fewer places again for disabled children and those parents who don’t work a typical 9-5 work pattern.

The Childcare Survey 2019 makes several calls to Government, to reform childcare, including increasing the maximum amount of childcare costs supported by Universal Credit.

You can read the full report and further information about the issues that were identified in Wales on the Coram Family and Childcare website.
