On Screen at Theatr Brycheiniog this Spring!
After a very successful launch back in the Autumn, Theatr Brycheiniog are delighted to continue their programme of Live Screenings this Spring. The theatre will bring you a mixture of classic and new works from The Royal Opera House, National Theatre Live and The Royal Ballet all screened live into their auditorium over the next four months.
First up from The Royal Opera House is Verdi’s La Traviata (Wed 30 Jan) which will be sung in Italian with English Subtitles. From the thrill of the unexpected romance to a heartbreaking reconciliation that comes too late, La Traviata will feature lavish period sets and costumes to enhance the reality of this moving tale which is based on a real life story.
A second January screening comes from National Theatre Live with I’m Not Running (Thu 31 Jan) written by Academy-Award nominated writer David Hare. This is an explosive new political drama exploring personal choices and their public consequences which follows junior doctor Pauline Gibson, who becomes the face of a campaign to save her local hospital. As media and public pressure mounts on Pauline to run for leadership of the Labour party, she faces an agonising decision…
In February The Royal Ballet present Don Quixote (Tue 19 Feb), a charming, funny and touching ballet about love and friendship. The story follows Don Quixote and his servant Sancho Panza who set out on a chivalrous adventure and bump into lovers Basilio and Kitri. The ballet is sure to be full of both astonishing technique and uplifting emotion.
Following on from a successful Shakespearian screening in Autumn, there is an encore screening of National Theatre Live’s The Tragedy of King Richard the Second (Mon 25 Feb). King Richard is a weak monarch, indecisive and irresponsible. With the country on the verge of crisis, nobleman Bolingbroke challenges Richard for the throne. This production poses the question, ‘When the country is on the brink of disaster, who is the right person to take charge – and should we trust them?’- a very pertinent question for our modern times.
In April there are two scheduled screenings from the Royal Opera House. The first is Verdi’s epic opera La Forza Del Destino (Tue 2 Apr), a story of bitter revenge pursued over miles and years. Leonora falls in love with Don Alvaro, but when her father forbids their marriage, a fatal accident triggers a drama of obsession, vengeance and tragedy.
The second April screening will be Faust (Tue 30 Apr). Audiences will be transported to the decedent and elegant 1870s Paris as Faust prepares to hand over his soul to Satan. Virtuoso leading roles, a large chorus, sensational sets, ballet and an ecstatic finale make this the epitome of theatrical spectacle.
Scheduled Live Screenings for the Summer will include National Theatre Live’s All My Sons, and both Romeo and Juliet and a Mixed Triple Bill from The Royal Ballet.
