It takes just one ‘quickstep’ to sign up for the Rhondda Walk!

Macmillan Cancer Support urges walkers to get online and register to help raise funds for the new Y Bwthyn Specialist Care Unit

Rhondda Walk organisers are encouraging people to sign up online and register for a place on the special tenth anniversary charity walk.

The closing date for registrations on the Macmillan Cancer Support website (www.macmillan.org.uk/rhonddawalk ) is midnight on Saturday 30 June. The ten-mile walk, which is suitable for families, new and experienced walkers, and even the dog, takes place the following month on Saturday 7 July.

This year, broadcaster and journalist Carolyn Hitt will be at the starting line at Coleg Y Cymoedd Rhondda Campus to wish the charity walkers all the best for the walk.

Speaking about supporting Macmillan Cancer Support in Wales, Carolyn Hitt, said: “I'm delighted to be cheering on the amazing participants of Macmillan Cancer Support's Rhondda Walk. They'll be walking to raise money for the new Y Bwthyn Unit in Llantrisant.

“My family has had personal experiences of the excellent palliative care at Y Bwthyn and it is great to hear of the developments as it'll have such a huge impact on the community. There's still time to sign up and join hundreds of other walkers to be part of something amazing.”

Since the first walk in 2008, the Rhondda Walk has raised approximately £250k and the ambition of this year’s walks (including the Llantrisant walk) to raise £50K for the new Y Bwthyn Specialist Care Unit at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Llantrisant.

Nicola Newhams, Macmillan Fundraising Manager for Rhondda Cynon Taff, said: “We are so grateful to the communities of the Rhondda Valleys who come out in force to support the annual Rhondda Walk – whether walking, volunteering of cheering on our walkers, they really make the event extra special.

“We are hoping this year’s walk will be our biggest and best to date. Not only are we celebrating our tenth anniversary but we’re also walking to help build the new Y Bwthyn Specialist Care Unit”
