Welsh Government support for M4 Black Route “evaporating overnight”
The frontrunner to replace Carwyn Jones as First Minister has suggested that he would support a cheaper alternative to the Black Route scheme.
Mark Drakeford said a cheaper alternative “would be attractive”, amidst concerns that the Black Route – the Welsh Government’s long favoured solution to congestion on the M4 – is now dead in the water.
Shadow Economy Secretary, Russell George, said:
“It has taken all of a week for the Welsh Government’s position on the M4 relief road to unravel.
“Carwyn Jones steps out of the office for one day and the First Minister-in-waiting has already started unravelling his legacy.
“Having committed millions of pounds to promoting the Black Route, it seems that the Welsh Government’s support for a motorway grade solution is evaporating overnight.
“We have raised questions over the scheme’s spiralling costs, but we are absolutely clear that action needs to be taken to alleviate the pressure on what is effectively the gateway to Wales.
“This apparent change of heart only adds to the chaos and confusion around the scheme.”
