GEORGE: Reacts to Welsh Government’s decision on Circuit of Wales
Welsh Conservative Statement on Circuit of Wales
Shadow Economy Secretary, Russell George, said:
“This decision immediately contradicts evidence given to the Public Accounts Committee by James Price yesterday, who claimed that the £9m spent to date on the Circuit of Wales had represented good value for money, and provided a significant project that is ‘ready for delivery’.
“Less than 24 hours later we learn that the Minister takes a vastly different view, and that the risk to Welsh Government would be too great.
“This is deeply concerning and we need to get to the heart of how such diverging opinions can be held by individuals at the heart of taking this decision.”
On the proposed £100m automotive technology business park, announced this morning he added:
“The decision not to proceed with support for the Circuit of Wales will disappoint Blaenau Gwent residents, but it does provide clarity after many years of uncertainty and hope.
“There will also be a great deal of cynicism about the new plans for an automotive technology business park in the area.
“Ebbw Vale has been designated as an enterprise zone for several years and has been spectacularly unsuccessful so far.
“Assembly Members will be looking for reassurance from the Cabinet Secretary that these plans have been properly thought through, and he will be held accountable for his promise to create 1,500 new jobs.”
