The Conservatives – all things to all people?
Well first we had Plaid throwing around random figures promising Council Tax cuts that didn't add up. Now we have the Conservatives apparently trying to bribe voters by offering all manner of tax reductions.
They say they will give a 2p in the pound cut on the basic rate of income tax – although they do qualify that promise. Their leader says
"when these powers are devolved to Wales in the coming years our ambition to reward taxpayers with a two pence cut to the basic rate should be within reach."
Should be? Well that's ok then.
They also say they will provide the resources to ensure a Council Tax freeze for the next five years. What they don't say is what else they will cut in order to pay for these give-aways. They have promised more money for Health, how can they deliver on that if they are going to slice such a significant amount off the tax revenue?
They say they will freeze Council Tax – will they then find the money to cover any imbalance in Council budgets? Or will there need to be even more cuts at a local level?
