Fears for 26,000 11-year-olds ‘unable to read properly’
Around 26,000 children are at risk of leaving Welsh primary schools unable to read properly according to the campaign group Read On. Get On.
The group has called for decisive action to be taken by whichever party triumphs in May’s election.
Shadow Minister for Education, Angela Burns, said:
“This report highlights serious and legitimate concerns, and as a party the Welsh Conservatives would echo the need for decisive action to be taken to tackle shortfalls in literacy standards at some Welsh primary schools.
“Labour presided over the Welsh education system here in Wales for over 17 years and have blown too many chances, and let too many pupils down.
“This is the party that freely admits to having taken their eye off the ball in education. We simply cannot afford to give them another five years at the helm.”
