South Wales Police has been judged as being “outstanding” in the way it engages with its local communities.

South Wales Police has been judged as being “outstanding” in the way it engages with its local communities.

That is the verdict of an HMIC report looking at how legitimatewe are at keeping people safe and reducing crime.

The report gives an overall judgement of “good” for South Wales Police and concludes that we excel in community engagement.

Among the highlights of the report are:

• We engage well with communities in South Wales and treat people with fairness and respect.

• There is a detailed level of knowledge of the local communities and we are making use of a wide range of methods to engage effectively, including hard-to-reach groups.

• We are able to respond to community concerns and understands the impact that problems have on our communities.

• The ethical culture of the force is strong with significant efforts being made by the Chief Constable and senior team to lead by example.

• We deal with complaints and misconduct in a fair and consistent way and our staff have a positive view of the professional standards department.

• We place a strong emphasis on the wellbeing and pastoral care of our workforce.

The report also says that the use of Taser in South Wales Police is fair and appropriate, with robust oversight and accountability.

However in the area of stop and search the HMIC concluded that we required improvement.
