Chancellor prioritises Wales in Spending Review

Responding to the Chancellor’s ‘Spending Review’, delivered today in the House of Commons, Welsh Conservative Leader Andrew RT Davies AM, said:

“This is a hugely welcome review that puts Wales first and prioritises communities the length and breadth of our country.

“An additional 900 million in capital funds is extremely positive and – if used correctly – has the potential to benefit everyone in Wales. A deal on a funding guarantee will ensure our country is never short-changed and income tax powers put Welsh government accountability at the top of the agenda.

“This change will ensure our government is accountable to the people it serves. Communities across Wales already we know we are the country’s only Low Tax Party, with our commitment to the living wage delivering a real increase in take home pay.

“The Chancellor’s decision on tax credits is also extremely welcome and a major uplift in the state pension from next April clearly shows Conservatives in government are the only party that will deliver on both national and financial security. While Labour continues to pose a significant threat to both, we continue to protect and support.

“Yet again, the harbingers of doom had it catastrophically wrong. This is incredibly good news for Wales and I welcome it wholeheartedly.”

Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister for Finance, Nick Ramsay AM, said:

“From support for the Cardiff City Deal to a rubber-stamped funding floor providing financial guarantees; this is an historic spending review that will benefit everyone in Wales.

“Conservatives in government are delivering for Britain and putting our country at the heart of that commitment.”
