EURO FEVER HITS WELSH CLASSROOMS
As Euro fever takes hold across Wales, teachers are now able to tap into the excitement to engage pupils this summer.
The FAW Trust – the charitable arm of the FAW that is responsible for the development of football in Wales – has produced the FAW Wales Euro 2016 education pack, written by Assistant Head Teacher Adam Raymond and Year 6 teacher and Physical Literacy Leader Jonathan Davies, both of Pencoed Primary School, Bridgend.
It is a curriculum resource designed for Key Stage 2 teachers and pupils across Wales, containing 24 lesson plans across the six, new proposed areas of Donaldson’s Curriculum Review.
Neil Ward, CEO of the FAW Trust, explained:
“We were really keen to use football and the Euros in engaging pupils across literacy, numeracy and digital competency through fun, exciting challenges. And of course, we hope that it inspires our nation’s 7-11 year olds to play the game as we strive to build a better future for football in Wales and to grow the game.
“Wales’ presence in the Euros provides us with this huge, unprecedented, not to be missed opportunity to inspire young children to play. We have the potential to impact on more than 5000 classrooms.”
Adam Raymond explains, “The resource is bespoke package of planned, rich learning tasks that teachers can use and adapt to fit their pupils’ needs. Tasks range from writing a match report to using iMovie to create a motivational film to fantasy football and using a budget.
“Of course, Health and Wellbeing is very prominent in Donaldson’s new curriculum areas so pupils will be challenged to create fun football games for break times, to develop a fitness and diet plan for Gareth Bale and to organise a mini football festival for the rest of the school.”
The FAW Wales Euro 2016 education pack is available on Hwb – the Welsh Government platform that provides access to a range of nationally provided digital learning tools and resources.
