Culvert repair schemes in five local communities
The Council will undertake five culvert repair schemes over the coming months in order to ensure their structural integrity and reduce the risk of flooding in local communities. The first project in Treherbert is now underway.
Alleviating the risk of flooding in local communities is a priority for the Council, and an investment of £550,000 for Flood Drainage and Flood Risk Management schemes has been previously announced by the Council – identified in March 2019 and included as part of the 2019/20 Highways Capital Programme.
Five culvert repair schemes will take place shortly:
- To the Foel Fach Culvert near the A4061 Rhigos Road, Treherbert. No traffic management is required, but the road space may be narrowed.
- To the culvert under The Avenue in Cwmpennar, Mountain Ash. Traffic management will be required on Mill Road, but not on The Avenue.
- To the culvert at Main Road (A4093) in Hendreforgan. No traffic management is required, but a section of the eastbound bus stop on Main Road will not be accessible. However, the bus stop will remain open along with the nearby path leading north to Brynhyfryd.
- To the Factory Calvert under the B4278 Gilfach Road in Gilfach Goch. No traffic management is required on the B4278, but equipment will be located on the private road to the north.
- To the Robert Street Culvert under the B4273 Windsor Place in Ynysybwl. Traffic management will be confirmed in due course.
The first scheme has begun on the Foel Fach Culvert in Treherbert, with preparatory works getting underway in the week commencing April 8.
Councillor Andrew Morgan, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Cabinet Member with responsibility for Highways, said: “The Council is committed to alleviating the risk of flooding in our communities – and this is reflected in the funding earmarked for local schemes during 2019/20. This includes projects to repair culverts – with schemes at Treherbert, Cwmpennar, Hendreforgan, Gilfach Goch and Ynysybwl set to begin shortly.
“Last year flood alleviation schemes were completed at Park Road, Cwmparc, and Bronallt Terrace, Abercwmboi – while work is ongoing at Aberhondda Road in Porth and at the Trem-y-Dyffryn housing estate in Mountain Ash, having started in early 2019. The Council also made a further £100,000 funding available to respond to damage caused by Storm Callum last year.
“The first of five culvert repair schemes over the coming months has begun in Trehebert. These local projects will further protect our communities from the risk of flooding during periods of heavy rainfall.”
