More than £600million has been paid out in clinical negligence and personal injury claims in Wales over the past five years, prompting the Welsh Conservatives to demand the Welsh Government call a health emergency.
£145 million has been paid out in claims for the year 2025-26.
On page 733 of a 1,100-page set of papers to the most recent Velindre University NHS Trust board meeting, it was revealed that NHS compensation claims could reach £310million annually within the next three years.
The Welsh Conservatives want to see investment in frontline NHS services to prevent such expenditure on clinical negligence claims.
The Royal College of Emergency Medicine has warned that emergency departments in Wales are under extreme pressure and in August warned that the emergency care system was at risk of “total collapse” without urgent action.
Darren Millar MS, Leader of the Welsh Conservatives, said:
“The scale of these payments is further evidence of the crisis engulfing the NHS in Wales.
“Behind every negligence claim is an individual or a family who may have suffered enormously because of NHS failures.
“Every pound spent addressing the consequences of clinical negligence is money that cannot be spent improving services and patient outcomes.
“The prospect of compensation payments reaching £310million per year, the equivalent of 8,000 nurses is frightening and completely unsustainable.
“As the Welsh Government doesn’t have a plan to address this issue, they should adopt ours instead by declaring a health emergency, surging bed numbers, and increasing the numbers of doctors and nurses, to get a grip of this issue and deliver the safe care that people in Wales need.”
