The Welsh Conservatives have called on the Welsh Government to do more to support Wales’ defence industry.
Last week, the UK Government was rocked by two major resignations from the Secretary of State for Defence and Armed Forces Minister over the failure to commit to defence spending.
Welsh Conservative Leader, Darren Millar MS, today called on the First Minister to commit to supporting Welsh veterans, recognising their professionalism and sacrifice, while supporting the contribution of Wales’ defence industry.
Leader of the Welsh Conservatives, Darren Millar MS, said:
“As Wales prepares to mark Armed Forces Day next week, it is appropriate to recognise on the courage and dedication of His Majesty’s armed forces and consider the further steps we can take to support these brave men and women.
“It is vital that Wales continues to honour the Armed Forces Covenant and we pay tribute to all those who work to support out veterans.
“A strong defence industry in Wales is key to a strong economy. Thousands of workers build and maintain the equipment our armed forces need to keep them safe around the world.
“It has been shocking to see the two most senior UK Government ministers with responsibility for our armed forces, resign because of a lack of confidence in the UK Government’s defence of the realm.
“In an increasingly uncertain world, it’s vital that we invest in our defence industry to safeguard our national security. The Welsh Government must do all it can to champion this vital sector and secure as much investment as possible as a result of increased spending by the UK Government.”
