The Welsh Conservatives have responded to the latest UK Covid-19 Public Inquiry report, warning that it fails to fully capture the impact of the pandemic on Wales’ health service. They say the findings highlight systemic weaknesses and capacity issues in the Welsh NHS, and stress the urgent need for a dedicated Wales-wide inquiry to examine the decisions of the Welsh Government and protect patients in future health emergencies.
- Commenting, Leader of the Welsh Conservatives, Darren Millar MS, said:
“The Covid-19 Inquiry report confirms what we have long warned: the Welsh NHS was left in a perilous state, struggling to cope with unprecedented demand.
“While the report highlights the heroic efforts of NHS staff, it also highlights how pre-existing problems, capacity shortfalls, digital inefficiencies, and systemic weaknesses worsened outcomes for patients.
“This report barely scratches the surface, Wales needs its own dedicated Covid-19 inquiry, so we can understand the full impact on our health service, hold those in power to account, and ensure lessons are learned to protect patients and staff in future health emergencies.”
Also Commenting, Welsh Conservative Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care, Peter Fox MS said:
“It’s clear from this report that Labour ministers were out of their depth and had no idea of the state of Wales’ pandemic readiness.
“Yet it fails to examine fully the decisions made by the Welsh Government and the knock-on consequences for Welsh families.
“These findings prove we still need a Wales-specific independent inquiry.”
