23 YEARS IN POWER – AND WE’RE STILL LOSING SERVICES in Cynon Valley

PUBLIC MEETING – SAVE OUR PALLIATIVE CARE WARD

Cynon Linc, Aberdare, 5th March
11:00 AM

Residents across Cynon Valley are being urged to attend a crucial public meeting about the proposed closure of the Specialist Palliative Care Ward (Ynysdawel Ward/Ward 6) at Ysbyty Cwm Cynon.

This eight-bed ward provides specialist end-of-life care with dignity and compassion to patients and support to families across Cynon and Merthyr. Under proposals from Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board, the ward could close, with patients redirected to:

  • Royal Glamorgan Hospital
  • Princess of Wales Hospital

If this happens, there will be no local specialist palliative care provision in the Cynon Valley or Merthyr Valley.

HOW DID WE GET HERE?

Cynon Valley once had two major hospitals. They were closed with promises of better, modern healthcare. Ysbyty Cwm Cynon opened in 2012 — yet services have steadily reduced ever since.

Meanwhile, a major new healthcare development — Llantrisant Health Park — is being planned near the Royal Glamorgan Hospital.

After 23 years of Welsh Labour running the Welsh Government, residents are asking serious questions.

WHERE IS THE SCRUTINY?

All councillors sitting on the relevant Health Board scrutiny committees are RCT councillors — the vast majority Labour.

We have:

  • A Labour MP in Westminster
  • A Labour MS in the Senedd
  • A Labour-controlled Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council
  • A Welsh Government led by Welsh Labour

When one party controls everything —
Where is the opposition?
Where is the independent scrutiny?
Who is standing up for Cynon Valley?

Many residents feel decisions are being waved through without proper challenge while local services are reduced bit by bit.

THIS IS ABOUT DIGNITY AND FAIRNESS

Campaigners support expanding care at home — but not at the expense of losing a specialist inpatient ward.

There are real concerns that:

  • The closure may be driven by staffing shortages
  • Families will be left carrying more responsibility
  • Cynon Valley continues to lose vital services

YOUR VOICE MATTERS – AND SO DOES YOUR VOTE

If you believe Cynon Valley deserves fair treatment…
If you feel there has been no real scrutiny or opposition…
