The Welsh Conservatives have criticised reports that the UK Labour Government plans to introduce a pay-per-mile tax for car owners. According to reports, the Chancellor is considering new road pricing measures to help plug a growing hole in public finances caused by Labour’s reckless spending.
Electric vehicle (EV) drivers will reportedly be affected, with proposals suggesting a 3p-per-mile fee on top of existing road taxes. Estimates indicate this could cost EV owners an additional £250 per year once the measures are implemented in the upcoming Autumn Budget on 26 November.
Commenting, Welsh Conservative Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Transport and Infrastructure, Sam Rowlands MS, said:
“This latest pay-per-mile tax proposal from UK Labour is another attack on hardworking motorists, who simply want to get from A to B without being overcharged.
“People in Wales are already feeling the effects of Labour’s war on motorists, from the default 20mph speed limit and frozen road projects to Cardiff Council’s forthcoming SUV tax.
“The Welsh Conservatives will always be on the side of motorists and our credible plan to scrap the 20mph default speed limit, unfreeze all road projects and deliver an M4 Relief Road will fix transport and get Wales moving.”
