A first of its kind event, showcasing how Value-Based Healthcare (VBHC) is changing the way excellence in care is delivered, was held by Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board earlier this week.
Value-Based Healthcare focuses on delivering on the health outcomes and experiences that matter most to patients, ensuring care is effective, personalised, and sustainable.
The event, at Coleg y Cymoedd in Nantgarw this week, attracted over 150 attendees and was opened with a keynote address from Jeremy Miles MS, Welsh Government Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care. It included a poster competition, and a showcase of 18 projects which were funded and supported by CTM’s VBHC team, highlighting the broad spectrum of innovative work being undertaken, and the positive impact that Value Based Healthcare has had across the health board.
Value-Based Healthcare helps CTM UHB to better understand the impact of treatments, ensuring that resources are used where they make the most difference. By listening to patients, using data-driven insights and applying a Value-Based Healthcare approach, CTM UHB can continuously improve care and support better health outcomes.
Since 2022 CTM UHB’s Value-Based Healthcare team has supported and funded 36 projects which have been co-designed in partnership with CTM UHB teams, external partners, service users and patients.
One of the projects benefiting from a VBHC approach and funding is CTM’s Alcohol Care Team (ACT) service: Value Based Health Care Case Study ACT Service
Jeremy Miles MS, Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care said: “Value-based Healthcare represents a fundamental shift in how we deliver care – moving beyond counting procedures to measuring what really matters, better outcomes for people and their families. The innovative projects showcased at this event organised by Cwm Taf Morgannwg UHB show the impact this approach is having. I want to see these approaches rolled out across Wales because everyone deserves care which makes a real difference to their lives.”
Dee Lowry, Assistant Director of Value and Efficiency said: “In line with national strategy, CTM UHB is adopting and embedding VBHC principles across the organisation, including implementing a digital system for the systematic implementation of VBHC measures such as PROMs and PREMs. By listening to patients, using data-driven insights and applying a Value-Based Healthcare approach, CTM UHB can continuously improve care and support better health outcomes.
“Our event demonstrated the range of work happening across CTM to put patients at the heart of how we plan and deliver care. Value-Based Healthcare is about listening to what matters most to our patients and working with them, our healthcare professionals, and our partners to improve service delivery and patient outcomes and experiences. Hearing the patient stories alongside the project presentations demonstrates that by working together we understand and become a learning organisation. I’m incredibly proud of the projects and the teams for the difference they are making for our communities.”
