Maintenance work at former coal tip site in Cwmbach

The photograph above shows the erosion of the coal tip caused by the adjoining watercourse.

Residents in Cwmbach may notice activity next week at a local former colliery site, as routine maintenance work is undertaken by the Council.

Funded by Welsh Government, the work will take place at the site known as ‘Tunnel Tip Aberdare’ – located east of Cenarth Drive and Llangorse Road.

The scheme will take place from Monday, August 4, and is expected to last around one week in total.

Site activity will include localised vegetation clearance around drainage channels and tip assets. Other areas of vegetation will also be cut back to allow future routine inspections and monitoring of the tip to take place more easily.

The work will be undertaken by the RCT Streetcare Team, with officers accessing the site on foot from access points at Cenarth Drive and Conway Drive.

Minimal overall disruption to the community is expected, with only limited disturbance while mechanical hand tools are being used.

The work is funded by taxpayers via Welsh Government’s Coal Tip Safety Grant, from which £11.49 million is allocated to monitor and maintain coal tips across the County Borough in 2025/26.
