A special event took place at Caerphilly Library last week as Cllr Jamie Pritchard, Deputy Leader of Caerphilly County Borough Council, joined the dedicated team from Caerphilly Library Service to show appreciation for a unique Ukrainian art exhibition.
Caerphilly County Borough Council, alongside the Library Service, has remained committed to supporting the Ukrainian community across the county borough. Last week’s event provided a meaningful opportunity to reflect on that partnership and receive a gesture of sincere appreciation.
As her art exhibition came to a close, Ukrainian artist and poet Olesia Miftahova presented two very special gifts: one of her original paintings to the Library, and a unique artwork to the Council – each a token of thanks for the welcome, care, and solidarity shown to Ukrainians who now call Caerphilly home.
Yulia Bond, representing Ukrainians in Caerphilly, reflected on the occasion:
“Today was more than just the closing of an art exhibition – it was a moment of connection, reflection, and heartfelt thanks. The support we’ve received from Caerphilly Library and the Council has helped so many of us feel seen, safe, and valued.”
Since 2023, Caerphilly Library has become much more than a place to borrow books. It has grown into a true sanctuary – a hub of healing, creativity, and belonging. From art clubs and conversation sessions to support groups and cultural events, it has been instrumental in helping Ukrainians build new lives and meaningful connections in the community.
We also extend our sincere thanks to Caerphilly County Borough Council for its ongoing commitment to inclusion and support. From offering free access to leisure centres for refugees, to backing initiatives like the Ukrainian Gratitude Garden, and supporting cultural programmes – your compassion has made a lasting impact.”
Cllr Jamie Pritchard, Deputy Leader of Caerphilly County Borough Council, shared his thoughts on the day:
“It’s been a privilege to meet with members of our Ukrainian community and witness the incredible talent and resilience they bring to Caerphilly. The artwork presented today is not just beautiful – it’s a powerful symbol of gratitude, friendship, and hope.
At Caerphilly County Borough Council, we’re proud to stand in solidarity with those who have sought safety and belonging here. We will continue to do all we can to support inclusive, welcoming spaces – like Caerphilly Library – where communities can come together, share cultures, and build brighter futures.”
