Survey work to inform future flood alleviation measures for Treorchy

Residents in Treorchy may notice survey work being undertaken from next week, as part of the development of the major Treorchy Flood Alleviation Scheme.

The future multi-million pound programme will invest in more flood alleviation measures for the community – to improve local infrastructure and increase the level of flood protection.

Further information about the scheme is included in a previous news item from September 2024, when the Council secured taxpayers’ money through the £1 million Welsh Government funding to further develop the project.

From Monday, July 14, topographic surveys will be undertaken across the community as part of the ongoing Design and Development phase.

The Council has appointed John Vincent Surveys Ltd as the contractor for this information-gathering exercise, which is expected to cause no disruption to the community.

The surveys will cover a broad area of Treorchy – including High Street, Column Street, Glyncoli Road, Dumfries Street, Luton Street, Stuart Street, Cemetery Road, Bute Street, Cardiff Street, Herbert Street, Howard Street, Senghenydd Street, Horeb Street, Chapel Street, and Glyncoli Close.

As part of this work, the contractor will be present in the community for a number of weeks.

CCTV and drone surveys will also be undertaken at a future date, to continue to inform the current phase of work.

Flood Investigation Reports

Under Section 19 of the Flood and Water Management Act 2010, Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council, as the Lead Local Flood Authority (LLFA), have a duty to investigate and publish reports on flood events that occur within its area to the extent that it considers it necessary or appropriate.

Work has started on a local flood alleviation scheme at the Dan Y Cribyn housing estate, to deliver a significant investment for the community.

The Welsh Government scheme is being delivered in two phases of work, covering the whole area of the housing estate, which will be completed during August 2025.

The scheme will carry out re-lining work across the culverted length of the ordinary watercourse network.

It follows a review of the asset surveys undertaken within the area, and the work intends to reduce flood risk to several ordinary watercourses and their associated culvert network.

The Council has appointed Arch Utilities Services as the main contractor to deliver the work, and day-to-day disruption to the community is expected to be minimal.

However, towards the end of the works, a day-time road closure (9am-4pm) will be needed at Old Parish Road – from Monday, August 4, for up to two weeks. Access to premises will be maintained during the closure, but there will be no through access for pedestrians nor emergency services.

The two combined phases of work represent an investment of almost £600,000 to improve local resilience to flooding.

Funding has been secured from Welsh Government’s Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management Small Scale Works Grant programmes to deliver both phases of work.
