On May 18th, 2025, a new arrivals-only platform (Platform 2) will open at Aberdare station, located south of the current platform and opposite the Sobell Leisure Centre according to Transport for Wales. This new platform is designed to accommodate the increased service frequency on the Aberdare line when the South Wales Metro is complete. Passengers travelling to Aberdare from Cardiff will use this new platform, while those travelling from Aberdare towards Cardiff will continue to use the existing Platform.

New Platform Location:
Located to the south of the current platform, opposite the Sobell Leisure Centre.
Purpose:
Solely for arrivals, allowing passengers to disembark from trains coming into Aberdare.
Departure Platform:
Platform 1 remains the departure platform for trains heading south towards Cardiff.
Significance:
This new platform and the associated track loop will enable the South Wales Metro to deliver four trains per hour on the Aberdare line when all the new tram-trains are in service.
