AED was not accessible on the building of the Bute Arms when a 999 emergency call was made from a member of the public

Following on from this urgent concern with Valley Times and the life-saving incident that happened yesterday outside Wetherspoons in Aberdare

We at RCT Heart Heroes Charity team of volunteers look after over 250 AEDs throughout the community of Rhondda Cynon Taf in keeping our community Heart Safe

In relation to this incident that we are very concerned about that a public access AED was not accessible on the building of the Bute Arms when a 999 emergency call was made from a member of the public, we at RCT Heart Heroes are the primary gaurdian of this location as its regularly serviced and checked when there is a deployment to this location

To reassure everyone throughout our community is that every AED under our guardianship is registered and placed on the National defibrillator Circuit database which is linked to the WAST Welsh Ambulance Service Trust as they have this information at hand

The protocol on when there is a 999 emergency situation, we all ring 999 with an emergency as to person has collapsed and not breathing, the call handler at ambulance control will direct you to the nearest available AED, the call handler will provide you with an access code to retrieve the AED from its cabinet to be used on the casualty which this was not the case in this incident, why wasn’t the person given the access code as this location is rescue ready, and has an access code to be retrieved from its cabinet as all this correct information is available to the call handler, we at RCT Heart Heroes have vital concerns that this wasn’t the case and we have contacted the relevant authorities to provide this vital information as to why the caller was not provided the access code

Time is ticking: Sudden cardiac arrest strikes swiftly. Having an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) nearby can make all the difference. It’s not just a machine; it’s a lifeline.

Underrated Heroes: AEDs are unsung heroes. They quietly wait, ready to spring into action when a life hangs in the balance. Let’s give them the recognition they deserve.

Community Safety is our priority: and we as a charity have a duty of care in making sure that every AED that is under our guardianship is accessible and rescue ready at all times
