PARENT OF AUTISTIC PERSON HITS BACK AT #RCT COUNCIL ENFORCEMENT OFFICER 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

A parent has taken to social media to call for better training for Council Enforcement Officers, after their autistic daughter was subjected to an horrific ordeal in #Pontypridd town centre.

They said :

“I’m keeping this post anonymous because it has no relevance who I am.

“It’s how people in “authority” approach the public.

“I have a very autistic adult child who very rarely leaves the house due to their condition. One of the only things they like doing outside is feeding the pigeons in town.

“Today while doing this they were confronted by a community enforcement officer who started writing them a ticket without any explanation.

“Due to their autism they thought they were in serious trouble and were getting arrested. This caused them real anxiety and distress.

“They tried to explain that they didn’t know that they couldn’t feed the pigeons because there were no signs and that they didn’t really understand their situation because of their autism.

“Luckily someone else intervened and the ticket was cancelled.

“My daughter was inconsolable when they came home because they thought they had got into trouble.

“I went into town and confronted the person involved who said “I couldn’t tell they were autistic when I saw them.

“Surely someone in this sort of job needs some training on mental health issues if dealing with the public.

“Please be aware when engaging with someone that they may have mental health issues.

“This isn’t a “woke” or “Snowflake” post and I’m not interested in hearing your views on pigeons.

“I’m just asking you (especially if you are in a position of “authority”) to be aware that some people struggle to do things we perceive as being “normal” and they often have to build themselves up to do them.

“I have reported the incident to the council and asked them to consider the type of people they are employing for these jobs and that they may need additional training.”

#Rhonnda Cynon Taf Council have been approached for comment.
