Flood risk management drop-in event at Aberdulais

Flood risk management drop-in event at Aberdulais

The Aberdulais hydraulic model, which looks in-depth at the long-term flood risk in the area, is now complete and Natural Resources Wales is holding a public drop-in event to outline its findings and discuss options with the community.

Between 12-7pm on Thursday 7 December, members of the community will have the opportunity to discuss the model baseline, run through the option appraisal process and discuss any alternative option suggestions.

The Aberdulais community has flooded multiple times in the past 40 years, where homes and businesses have suffered internal flooding. The most recent being during Storm Dennis in 2020 when 27 properties flooded.

Since then, a section of footpath alongside the River Neath has been raised to reduce the flood risk for the path and 30 residential properties were installed with Property Flood Resilience measures.

Merrissa Fallas, Projects and Programmes Delivery Officer, for Natural Resources Wales, said:

“We have carried out extensive work to update the hydraulic modelling for Aberdulais and are keen to share options with the local community and welcome their feedback at this planned drop-in session.

“As the climate changes, we will face more frequent storms and heavy rain, as well as rising sea levels. This will only increase the risk of flooding and disruption to the community.

“At this event we will clearly outline the results of our modelling work and present to the community the flood risk mitigation options which could help to build resilience in the area.

“I encourage members of the community to attend the drop-in session.”

Find out more about the options at an informal drop-in event at the Riverside Golf Range, Aberdulais SA10 8ES on Thursday 7 December 2023. The event is open to all from 12pm-7pm and will be attended by NRW’s project team including Binnies, the design consultant.
