A partnership between local Aberdare football team, Gadlys Rovers Juniors, and local energy company, Pennant Walters, is aiming to raise over £500 for cancer centre, Velindre.

The two are coming together in a sponsored walk up Pen-y-Fan this coming Friday, with funds raised going directly to Velindre, the Hospital of Hope, which is the wider Walters Group’s chosen charity for 2020/21.

The relationship was kickstarted last year after Pennant Walters answered a plea from Gadlys Rovers Juniors under 12 team, which was looking for a headline sponsor for the youth side. Providing money, the team was kitted out with training gear for its 19 players and three coaches and the relationship has gone from strength to strength.

Gadlys Rovers Juniors under 12 coach, Alun Bevan, explains:

“We were thrilled when Pennant Walters offered assistance and became our headline sponsor. The money meant that our under 12’s all had brand new training gear to start the season, which proudly displays the company logo.

“The Pen-y-Fan climb is the final event of our ‘May Challenge’ which has seen us walking the equivalent distance of the combined ascents and descents of five British mountain peaks – Ben Nevis, Scarfel Pike, Snowdon, Cadyr Idris and Pen-y-Fan, totalling 1852.6 kilometres. We’re all excited about completing the challenge, whilst raising funds for such a worthy organisation.”

The team, which includes Gadlys Rovers Juniors players, coaches and family members, as well as Walters Group and Pennant Walters colleagues, will conquer the highest mountain in southern Britain next Friday (28 May).

Pennant Walters Operations Manager, Harry Llewellyn, added:

“We are pleased that our sponsorship of the youth side has allowed us to develop a relationship that will now benefit our chosen charity, Velindre.

“We are all excited about the adventure up Pen-y-Fan and want to thank everyone for their support. The money will go directly to Velindre, ensuring the best possible support is offered to every patient, their families and carers dealing with cancer.”

The sponsorship of Gadlys Rovers Juniors is linked to Pennant Walters’ 9 turbine 22MW Mynydd Bwllfa windfarm near Aberdare in Rhondda Cynon Taf, which became operational in summer 2015. It builds on previous donations which have seen the company provide money to support various community groups.

Pennant Walters is a renewable energy development company with its head office in Hirwaun, Rhondda Cynon Taf, and is part of the Walters Group. The Group is developing a number of renewable energy projects across Wales that include onshore wind, ground mounted solar, hydroelectric and biomass technologies.
