Extra Care facility or Sheltered and Supported Housing?
Planning permission granted for new Pontypridd Extra Care facility
The Council’s Planning and Development Committee has granted full planning permission for a new Extra Care facility on the site of the former Pontypridd Magistrates’ Court – to create 60 new extra care places.
At their meeting on February 21, the application by Jehu Project Services and Linc Cymru was accepted by Committee Members. The development will provide 57 one-bed and three two-bed Extra Care apartments in a brand new building – which will benefit from a 31-space car park, communal landscaped gardens, dining areas, communal kitchen, lounge areas and a hair salon.
This scheme is part of a proposed £50m Extra Care investment across the County Borough, with five brand new facilities planned in addition to Ty Heulog in Talbot Green, which opened in 2016. Construction has begun on the first of the new facilities at Club Street in Aberaman, while other schemes are planned for Mountain Ash, Treorchy and Porth, as well as Pontypridd.
Extra Care delivers modern accommodation to meet the needs and changing expectations of the growing older population, allowing them to live as independently as possible in their own homes. They are built-for-purpose and cater for a range of assessed needs – as residents receive targeted, 24/7 on-site support. A number of community provisions are also available on site.
The Pontypridd Extra Care facility in the Graig will be built over five floors, on the site of the former Magistrates’ Court which was demolished in 2018. Access to the site will be via the existing location on Union Street – which will need to be widened to facilitate the Extra Care development.
The application was recommended for approval by Officers in a report to Thursday’s Committee meeting. The report outlined the development as a rare opportunity to provide much-needed supported living accommodation.
Catherine Divers, Head of Independent Living at Linc Cymru said: “We’re excited to have received planning permission to build on the site of the old Magistrates Court in Pontypridd.
“This is Linc’s second extra care development in partnership with Rhondda Cynon Taf Council. Extra care provides the opportunity for people to live as active and as independent lives as possible, and we’re looking forward to providing more high quality extra care homes in the area.”

Sheltered and Supported Housing
It aims to provide a safe environment where people can make friends and enjoy a range of social activities while living independently. In many cases, a warden service is supplied for greater reassurance and better security.
Each association has its own rules about who is eligible to apply for sheltered accommodation. If you are interested in applying for this type of accommodation, you can contact the association that manages your chosen complex. It may be useful to visit several complexes before making a formal application, to give you the opportunity to meet and chat to other residents about how they find living there.
