Cwmbach football club receives financial boost

A well-established football club in Cwmbach has received a financial boost to help pay the escalating pitch fees.

Cwmbach Royal Stars Football Club has received £1,000 from Persimmon Homes East Wales as part of the leading house builder’s Community Champions scheme.

The club, established in 1969, has junior teams and senior teams playing in the Aberdare League and the South Wales Alliance League. They also hope to have a youth side in the future, helping their under-16s to move onto the next level.

The club must find £1,200 for each team to ensure they can use the local field for matches.

Lewis Jones, treasurer at Royal Stars, said: “It’s becoming harder and harder to keep the club running with the pitch fees, insurance costs and equipment expenses.

“We are absolutely thrilled that Persimmon Homes East Wales has supported us with this generous donation. It means that more people in the Cwmbach area will be able to stay fit and healthy while making friends and participating in an active pastime.”

The club holds an annual five-a-side tournament to raise money for Cancer Research.

The past two seasons the club has won the under-16s league title, Aberdare Division Two and finished as runners-up in the under-14s league.

The Persimmon Community Champions initiative is a national programme where charities and groups can apply for funding up to the value of £1,000 to match money they have already raised themselves.  Nationwide the company will donate a total of £750,000.

Victoria Williams, Head of Sales at Persimmon Homes East Wales, said: “We’re delighted to be able to support such a great club.
“We know that the cost of running sports clubs is rising all the time. It’s a real strain on the volunteers at these clubs to find the money each season, yet without them hundreds of people would not be able to participate in sport.
“Community Champions is a fantastic initiative by Persimmon which allows us to help the charities and groups in which we are active.
“If people were unsuccessful last month we urge them to visit the Persimmon Homes website and to try again and hopefully they will become our next Community Champion.”
Persimmon East Wales has developments across the region, including Coed Dyffryn in Aberdare, where there are three and four bedroom homes available from £149,995 or £118,396 with Help to Buy – Wales.
