New chairman appointed to Cwm Taf University Health Board

Professor Marcus Longley has been appointed Chair of Cwm Taf University Health Board and will commence his four year term of office in October 2017.

Professor Longley will replace Dr Chris Jones, who has served the maximum term as chairman of the Board, which ends this autumn after eight years.

Currently Vice Chair of the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, Professor Longley has been a Special Advisor for Health to the Welsh Affairs Committee in the House of Commons, and is currently an Expert Advisor to the Bevan Commission, having previously been a Member.

He is also Professor of Applied Health Policy at the University of South Wales, where he is Director of the Welsh Institute for Health and Social Care. Earlier this year he was appointed the Board Member for Wales on the UK Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care and was elected a Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health of the Royal Colleges of Physicians in 2008.

Professor Longley said: “I am really delighted to be joining Cwm Taf. It is a great privilege to follow in Dr Chris Jones’ footsteps, and to be joining a Health Board in such good shape. I know by repute something of the brilliant care provided by staff right across Cwm Taf, and I’m very much looking forward to finding out more.”

Dr Chris Jones, who was a practising GP in the South Wales valleys for more than 30 years served Cwm Taf as Chair of Rhondda Cynon Taf Teaching Local Health Group/Board from 2003 and was appointed Chair of Cwm Taf Health Board in 2009. During his tenure he also led two ministerial reviews of health service re-design and led on the strategic delivery programme “Setting the Direction” for Primary and Community Services in Wales.

Dr Jones said: “I am very pleased to welcome Marcus as the new Chair of Cwm Taf University Health Board. I am sure he will bring energy and enthusiasm to the team and continue to drive the organisation forward. I look forward to working closely with him over the next three months to ensure a smooth transition and I wish him every success in his chairmanship.”
