genealogy GAYLARD family in ABERDARE
Posted by on the 7th April 2010
I'm searching information about my mother's family who lived in Aberdare. I would like to know their names and where they lived and their activity. I only know that the father of my mother was a preacher. My mother has died in 1987 and I have always lived in France because my father is french.
the name of my mother was Cynthia GAYLARD. I would like to find things about my grandmother too who died in 1966. Kate GAYLARD but I don't know her name before mariage.
What about my grand grand parents? I know NOTHING AT ALL. I only have a souvenir of the name of Smith.
My mother had a brother too, Leslie, who died during the 2nd war.
If anyone knows anything concerning my family it would be really lovely because deep in my heart and thanks to my poor mother I feel Welsh and I would like not to break the link for my own children.
I thank you all.

William Gaylard and Katie Smith were married in Merthyr in the December Quarter 1925
I guess Bethan is the person who answered me because I also see the name of Jenny in the answer. Anyway I thank you for this information. However can I ask you how do you know that and how do you know you talk about the right persons? Are you an acquaintance of the Gaylard family? Thank you again!
I would like to know more things about the family of my grand parents and of them too. Where did they live in Aberdare? Or see photographies of my mother at school in Aberdare? She was born in 1933 and lived in 27 bryg... road? (can't write the correct address)
Don't you know how I could find scholl photographies of this time?
Barbara, my mother does a bit of historical research, and not so long ago she researched the story of someone called Cynthia Gillard. During the research, it turned out that the surname may actually have been Gaylard instead so this may be for you. Anyway, my aunty knew about this story well, and this is what she told us.
"Cynthia Gillard lived in Brynmair Road, Godreaman, until she got married to a French man. They went back to France to live and had a child there. After a while, Cynthia became homesick, and came back to Wales, bringing the child with her. Shortly after, her husband came after her, and smuggled the child back to France. Apparently, this was a major news story at the time, with the police trying to stop him at the airport. After a couple of weeks, Cynthia returned to France and got back together with her husband. Later, they had another child together.
Her father was an engineer involved in the building of the Phurnacite plant, and the family owned Bill Smith’s wallpaper shop in Aberdare. Her brother, Leslie Gillard, drowned in Porthcawl.
According to her cousin, Betty Smith, Cynthia died and was buried in France around thirty years ago.
This information was provided by Olive Bowen, a friend of the late Betty Smith."
My mother also found the census record from the time, but I'll have to dig that up. I hope some of what I've given you is of help, Barbara. :)
JENNY no Barbara I am not a relation, I got the details from Free BDM, just google it in and try yourself
Best Wishes Bethan
thank you for answering Bethan. I already knew all this about my mother, except the part of my grand parents and the fact that my uncle drowned in Porthcawl. I had the souvenir that he had an accident with a small a military truck?
anyway thank you for all this. Indeed the name wan Gillard then it was Gaylard but I don't know why.
Could you tell me what is free BDM in french you mentionned at the end of your comment please?
and I hope I don't make too many mistakes in english:)
JENNY
Hi Barbara I am afraid that I do not speak French, all you have to do is type Free BDM into a search engine, and when you get the site just type in the name Gaylard do not put anything else, also click on marriages.
Hope you find it, but I am 99% certain it is the correct date because it was the only Gaylard to marry a Katie.
Very best wishes Bethan
it's incredible! Thank you Bethan. Don't you know if I could find such a site with photographies of the time taken in Aberdare with the name of the people on it? Don't you know where I could find photogtaphies of the wallpaper shop you told my grandparents had in Aberdare?
have a lovely Sunday!
JENNY Hi Barbara
it was not me who told you about your Welsh family, it was "The Source" but if you put a request on this site perhaps someone can help you.
Also there is a good site with loads of photo's of Aberdare
www.rhondda-cynon-taff.gov.uk/libraries
then go to the Rhondda-Cynon-Taff Heritage Trail
Take a look on there perhaps you will find something.
Very Best Wishes Bethan
