Info from RCT website
Due to the overwhelming demand, those wishing to take part in the Nos Galan Road Races in Mountain Ash will NOT be able to register to take part on the actual day of the races.
For the first time ever, there will be NO registration point at Mountain Ash Day Centre ahead of the world-famous event on New Year’s Eve.
The 2012 Nos Galan Road Races look set to break all records, with more runners already registered to take part than ever before - the biggest field of runners for 46 years!
Organisers are having to ‘cap’ the number of entrants in each race due to Health and Safety reasons. There will be 800 participants in the 5k Adults Fun Run, 200 athletes in the Elite Race and 150 entrants per age category in each of the Children’s races.
The annual event on Monday, December 31, is organised by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and the Nos Galan Committee.
There are still limited places available for runners to register online (www.nosgalan.co.uk))
So the advice is make sure you register NOW to secure your place to avoid disappointment on the night.
The oldest entrant in this year’s Adult Race so far is 74, proving that age and ability does not come into it when it comes to Nos Galan.
So far the runners travelling the furthest to take part in the 2012 Nos Galan Road Races are from Washington DC and San Diego - both in the United States of America.
The Nos Galan Road Races will take in Mountain Ash on Monday, December 31.
The fun starts in the town centre at 4pm with the first of the children’s races. This will be followed by an elite race and 5k adult fun run and a spectacular fireworks display.
The highlight of the night will be the arrival of the Nos Galan Mystery Runner, who will light the Nos Galan beacon at Rhos Square in Oxford Street, Mountain Ash.
Past Nos Galan Mystery Runners have included Ron Jones, David Bedford, Lillian Board, David Hemery, John Hartson and Shane Williams.
Rhondda Cynon Taf Council Deputy Mayor, Cllr Ann Crimmings, who is also Chair of the Nos Galan Committee and Secretary of Aberdare Valley Amateur Athletics Club, said: “This looks like being the biggest Nos Galan event in Rhondda Cynon Taf in 46 years, with the highest number of entries since 1966.
“It has always been a truly global event but this year it is proving to be more popular than ever before.
“We anticipate that all races will be full long before December 31 therefopre there will be no race registration on the day this year.
“However, everyone is still invited to Mountain Ash town centre on New Year’s Eve to enjoy the unique event - the Nos Galan Road Races.”
As well as support from Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, the race is also sponsored by Persimmon Homes, Darran Las Communities First, Amgen Cymru, RCT Homes, and Fernhill and Glenboi Communities First. Again this year, Springfield Soft Drinks are also supporting the races, along with Buy As You View and Red Bull.
A free shuttle bus will run every 10-15 minutes from 3.30pm until 9.30pm on Monday, December 31, from Mountain Ash Comprehensive School, with drop-off and return collection from the bus stop outside the Aberdare Hotel, Ffrwd Crescent, near the town bridge.
