This is Shocking

I just cannot believe this , Mr Brown gives aid to India, just read it on the news site.

Quote
Mr Brown said that of the new package £500m will be dedicated to health and education.

Surely £500m would be better spent on health and education in this Country.

BC This is a disgrace ,they are giving away our money . i just hate Politicians they do no good for country ,dont get my Hubby started on that Subject. Trish

Is this a Joke !
Theres children living of rubbish dumps in India, Are you worse of than them ! The British invaded India and took what they could, one of the main reason there country in in poverty.

"India has more than 836 million people living on less than 50 cents ($2 in PPP) a day according to a recent report"

Iknow there are children in India who have to live on rubbish tips and need food i would not begrudge them money sorry if i upset any one i would be the first one to give to a good course .Trish

I also give willingly to charities . If the government has so much money to give away to other countries why are they not helping charities here more.

It would be all very well giving to others if this country could afford it , but this country is in a great deal of debt itself. You cannot share what you haven't got.

While ever there are thousands of people in this country homeless and hungry and living on the streets, people being refused medication because it is too dear , a desparate need for more hospital , then there are the old people dying of cold in the winter because they cannot afford to warm their home through lack of money and schools slowly falling to pieces ,I don't think we should be helping out other countries.

We should be putting our own house in order first .

Also the British people cannot be held responsible and made to pay for things that happened in past history.

I feel sorry for the people of India and any other country
where people are suffering , but there are a hell of a lot of people in this country suffering too who desparately need help.

BG

Beacon_Girl, I agree, charity begins at home.

Yes there are very poor people in India, There are also very, very wealthy people in India.

Remember when the Agha Khan was alive, there were more poor people there then and yet they used to weigh him on each birthday and give him Gold of the same weight.

Did he as an Indian, have a conscience about that? I don't think so.

By all means help people, but put your own house in order first.

I keep in touch with Veterans from the Suez Canal days so they are all old soldiers now - those that made it home after their N Service that is - over 600 are still out there beneath the sand.
Tony is an ex RAF Veteran and he mentioned today that Angie his wife ( an ex nurse) didn't have a good night as her NHS hospital can't prescribe the drug she needs because of the cost. Can we expect good folk like these to understand how a country can afford to donate all that money (worth cause it might be) when at home there must be many suffering and being told we can't afford it?

I agree with BG, Trish, Nerys, Cymro and Evacuee.
I did a 3 year stretch of time in India/Burma during WWII, and believe me, the poverty, sickness and the squalor of living conditions was heartbreaking to see, and I suppose it's the same to this day.
However, we also have various degrees of poverty and 'supposedly' lack of funds for the treatment of cancers and other killer diseases in this country. I'm all for helping the poor countrys in this world - and there are plenty of them, - but this government needs to look at the plight of many of our own people who are refused possible cures, because of lack of funds.
Something needs to be done about inventing a system of curbing the outrageous sums of money paid to so-called sporting stars. Who the hell deserves or needs £100,000 a week, for kicking a bag of wind around a patch of green for a couple of hours. I'm a big soccer fan, and have been since the 30s, but come-on, the money these lads are paid is....obscene!!! And also the so-called pop-stars who become multi-millionaires for screaming some noises on a CD.
No, sorry, you can call me a miserable old fogey if you like, but let's be fair, a great part of society has gone stark raving mad.

By comparison,...what payment should the great miners of yesteryear get then? If I remember rightly most of them slogged their boots off down a dark hole for a mere £2.5s a week.

Thanks for your support on this folks , I thought I was going to get jumped on from a great height for voicing my opinions on this.

Yes, I agree with your thoughts BG. We've got a hell of a lot of problems that need sorting out in our country.

But mind, I also partly agree with Jos. It IS one hell of a problem in India,....but also in the Philippines, Africa and other parts of our planet.

I think you are right to BG, lets not forget India has its own an expensive nuclear program that cost millions.
I have heard that rich people in India do not pay tax and don’t forget who just bought out the steel company Corus yet another company from India. It would seem there is plenty of wealth in India just the Indian government has its priorities wrong or have they when we the British taxpayer give them millions to squander on nuclear bombs.
Brown needs to put his own house in order the Indian government will never support its own poor when it gets fee handouts from the British taxpayer.

Relax BG what you voiced needs saying, sorry to beat the same drum again but the 6pm BBC TV news tonight showed a gentleman who has an eye condition that has taken the sight of one eye and he is still being denied access to drugs that can save his other because of cost, this respectable retired couple are funding it out of their savings or he could be totally blind within 3 months. Lets have compassion by all means but also common sense.

I could have said a lot more but I had to restrain myself or I might have got thrown off the site.

Why the devil are they developing these new drugs if they cannot afford to give them to people who need them is beyond me.

I give up in dispair I cannot believe half the things that this government is doing.

I also agree with you BG, ok there is poverty in India and it needs sorting, but did it not say on the news last night that India is in the top 5 os the rich countries and we came below it. I am glad that you also like myself cannot understand why they are developing medicine that people cannot afford, I think this Gov needs to get its act to gether.

Let us not forgot also that out of the 500M pounds that will be sent to India, exactly how much of that will ever see the people it was meant for? Not damn much I bet. As is always the case with hand-outs, by the time it goes through the govenment, diplomats, all the cheating and stealing...zilch will probably end up where it is supposed to be. The Indian government needs to become more accountable, as should every country seeking handouts, they have enough wealth to support high lifestyles for their politicians. As you we agree, look to your own people first, it's digusting that people living and paying taxes in UK have to pay privately for fast medical treatment, or the vast majority who can't afford to do that have to do without! Same here in Canada unfortunately, politics/politicians worldwide are corrupt. India was once known as "The Jewel in the Crown", but since independence in 1947 - nothing but in-fighting and internal hatred of their own people and religions.

I won't give to ANY charities now because the money given so often doesn't find it's way to the ones it was meant for. Do you know that millions of dollars worth of goods and materials are still rotting in Sri Lanka from the psunami charity and only $4 million out of $10 million was distributed by the Red Cross for victims of the Bali bombings until a complaint was made and only then did they come up with a bigger pay out.

The poor of India wouldn't benefit, their government will see to that.

Australia over the years have given billions of dollars in overseas aid to Indonesia and their ex president was corrupt for years and siphoned absolute fortunes estimated to be around 30 Billion dollars, yes $30billion, for the family out of their economy. And Indonesia can afford to maintain the largest army in the South East Asia region.
approx 3 million men.

I'm with you B G.

Charity should always begin at home I say.
