“It’s not just about protecting yourself – it’s about protecting your loved ones and your community.”

Louise, from Pontypridd, has been getting the flu vaccine every year for the past seven years. As a former carer for her mum and a qualified teacher working in local schools, she understands the importance of protecting vulnerable people.

“I used to get vaccinated when I was caring for my mum. Now I do it to protect the children I work with – especially those with autism or health conditions who might not be able to get the nasal flu vaccine – and my own family. I also have a health condition and could become very poorly with flu.

Flu vaccines are quick and very safe and could prevent weeks of serious illness. Louise shared: “I’ve had the flu vaccination for seven years and I’ve never had any side effects.”

In addition to working in local schools, Louise uses public transport regularly which increases the risk of spreading germs. The children she works with are also involved in many after-school and sports clubs, meaning she’s in contact with lots of families.

“Flu can be life-threatening, especially for those most at risk. You never know who you’re sitting next to or who they’re caring for at home. Everyone needs to do their bit.”

She found getting the vaccine at Ashgrove Surgery in Pontypridd incredibly easy: “I got a text saying they were doing walk-ins. I went in, took my coat off, sat down – and it was done before I even realised!”

Ashgrove Surgery staff said: “Flu vaccination is one of the best ways to protect against catching and spreading flu. If you think you might have missed your invitation for a flu vaccine, contact your GP or your local pharmacy.”

There will be an additional walk-in event to have a flu vaccination at Ashgrove Surgery on 17 November from 5pm – 7pm.
