CCBC responds positively to leisure centre feedback

Plans to close three leisure centres in the Caerphilly county borough have been reconsidered by the council’s Cabinet this week.

Bedwas, Cefn Fforest and New Tredegar Leisure Centres had all been earmarked for closure, following a period of public consultation held earlier this year.

The council’s Cabinet met this week (Wednesday 14th May) in order to reach a final decision on the proposals.

After carefully reviewing the feedback from the public consultation and the views of the council’s Joint Scrutiny Committee held earlier this week, the Cabinet has agreed a compromise approach:

Closure of Bedwas Leisure Centre to coincide with the opening of the new Caerphilly Leisure and Wellbeing Hub, currently anticipated to be March 2027.
Keep Cefn Forrest Leisure Centre open but with closure of the fitness suite and greatly reduced opening hours of 4pm to 8pm on weekdays and 4 hours on a Saturday and on a Sunday from 31st August 2025 making a potential saving of circa £200k.
Keep New Tredegar Leisure Centre open but with reduced hours from 31st August 2025

Cllr Chris Morgan, Cabinet Member for Communities and Leisure said, “We have listened carefully to all the feedback received from the community and feel that this compromise position is the best way forward. It allows us to continue to deliver services while securing much needed savings.”

Leader of Council, Cllr Sean Morgan said, “I’m sure the community will welcome this decision, as it clearly demonstrates that we are listening to their views.”

“However, it is also important that everyone understands we still have to deliver significant savings in order to plug a £29milluion hole in our budget over the next 3 years, so doing nothing is not an option,” he added.
