Discharge delays see thousands stuck in Welsh hospitals

Commenting on the news that discharge delays have meant that 1,594 people who are fit to leave remain in Welsh hospitals, Sam Rowlands MS, Welsh Conservative Shadow Health Minister said:

“The Labour Welsh Government have the wrong priorities.

“It can’t be right that £120 million has been earmarked by Labour, with the support of Plaid Cymru, for the creation of 36 more politicians when we could be investing in more doctors and nurses to cut assessment delays in the Welsh NHS and save many millions in the long run.

“The Welsh Conservatives brought forward a motion in the Senedd to heed the warnings of the Healthcare Inspectorate in January, particularly around social care transfer delays, but Labour voted against our plan.”

Will the Doctor pay rise to be replicated in Wales?

Responding to BMA Cymru Wales’ call for the replication of England’s junior doctor pay rise with a question to the Labour Welsh Government, Sam Rowlands MS, Welsh Conservative Shadow Health Minister said:

“Junior doctors and Welsh taxpayers deserve clarity from Labour ministers in the Senedd.

“Will the consequential funding that the Labour Welsh Government is set to receive for the new pay offer for junior doctors in England be replicated in Wales?

“Simply paying doctors more, however, is not enough in and of itself. We need a substantial workforce plan to attract and recruit the talent the Welsh NHS needs and we should start by refunding the healthcare tuition fees of those who stay and work in Wales.”
