Vaughan Gething has quit as Welsh Labour leader and First Minister of Wales.

Cynon Valley MS Vikki Howells was among the first to nominate Vaughan Gething for the 2024 Welsh Labour leadership election, the Cynon Valley Ms also voted for Vaughan Gething when there was a call for a vote of no confidence in the first minister.

On 5 June County Times reported: that Ms Howells said she and the rest of the Welsh Labour group are behind Mr Gething and would not resign even if he lost. She added: “This is not a binding vote, bind votes are the votes cast at the ballot box in the Senedd election.

“No, he wouldn’t have to resign because he just won a democratic vote to be leader of Welsh Labour that was cast on a one member, one vote basis.”

Ms Howells branded the no-confidence vote a “gimmick” from the Conservatives and insisted the vote and concerns about Mr Gething were not being raised as an issue on the doorstep.

She added: “I can say that hand on heart that every single member who will be present in the chamber or voting online today will be voted in wholeheartedly with confidence in Vaughan Gething.”

Others who nominated Vaughan Gething were: Dawn Bowden Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney, Jayne Bryant Newport West, Hefin David Caerphilly, Rebecca Evans Gower, Eluned Morgan

Lynne Neagle Torfaen,  Jack Sargeant Alyn and Deeside Ken Skates Clwyd South Joyce Watson.

Responding to Welsh Government Ministers resigning from Government this morning, Andrew RT Davies MS, Leader of the Welsh Conservatives, said:

“Vaughan Gething’s time as First Minister is rightly coming to an end.

“But Labour cannot fool the people of Wales. These Ministers, like Jeremy Miles, sat in his Cabinet, they stood by his side, and they are culpable for the breakdown of governance in Wales.
