Calls to act on lessons from concert chaos say Welsh Conservatives

Welsh Conservatives are calling on Welsh Ministers to learn from the mistakes of the concert carnage as Cardiff played host to major concerts.

This weekend sees Cardiff play host to more major events as Tom Jones and Stereophonics are set to play in front of thousands of fans.

Earlier this week Transport for Wales strongly encouraged people to avoid using trains over the weekend, to avoid overcrowding.

Commenting on the news, Welsh Conservatives Shadow Transport Minister, Natasha Asghar MS said:

“Only two weeks ago, we all witnessed complete chaos in South Wales with Cardiff hosting three major concerts at the Principality stadium. Cardiff came to a standstill as a result of Cardiff Council, Transport for Wales and Labour Ministers failing to adequately prepare for concerts that we all knew about well in advance.

“Queues of up to 15 miles long on the M4, with motorists trapped in car parks and the city centre in gridlock alongside packed train carriages and disappointed fans. This is Labour’s transport legacy. A legacy they cannot blame the UK government for.

“Labour ministers need to work with Transport for Wales to ensure that there is enough capacity on trains so fans can enjoy the concerts in Cardiff and above all the Labour government needs to form a proper major events strategy that is fit for purpose.”

“The Minister simply saying this is all “part of the experience’ is just unacceptable.”

Also commenting, Welsh Conservatives Shadow Economy Minister, Paul Davies MS said:

“The Labour Government’s Major Events Strategy expired over two years ago and it is obvious that their plan has utterly failed with these issues cropping up time and time again when major events are hosted in Wales.

“We keep hearing those lessons are being learnt, and it’s clear they need to be learnt very quickly.

“Labour Ministers need to learn lessons and publish a new strategy focused on job creation and making sure that all of Wales feels an economic boost when big events are held here.”
