Shielding “announcement does not go far enough”

Commenting on the news that those who were previously shielding are being told to no longer attend work or school outside of the home, Welsh Conservative Shadow Health Minister, Andrew RT Davies MS said:

“I’m pleased that the Welsh Government has thought about the most at risk in our communities however, today’s announcement does not go far enough.

“What this pandemic has shown is that half measures are not good enough, especially when there are reports today that Wales has the highest rate of Covid-19 infections per 100,000 people in the World.

“The Welsh Government needs to deliver our Winter Protection Plan, which would give robust financial, physical and emotional support to those who would have to shield. We must not forget this vital section of our community as we head into the slimmed down festive season.”

The Welsh Conservative Winter Protection Plan includes the resumption of shielding, as well as:

  • New food box scheme for the 130,000 people in Wales on the shielding list
  • Urgent financial package of support for those ‘shielding’ who are unable to work
  • Work with retailers to introduce a dedicated supermarket shopping slot
  • Secure priority service from energy suppliers like the previous agreements with retailers
