River bridge repairs at Station Road in Hirwaun

It would be good to know the start date for repairs on the Tramway Bridge in Robertstown?

The Council is set to begin an essential scheme to repair a river bridge at Station Road in Hirwaun, requiring temporary traffic lights in the area.

The work, which gets underway on Monday, June 17, will see concrete and masonry repairs undertaken to the bridge. This £230,000 scheme is important to future-proof the structure that supports the only highway access to around 300 homes in the Station Road and Penyard Road areas of Hirwaun.

The repairs are complex to undertake, with the majority of work taking place in the river channel. Work is scheduled to last approximately 10 weeks, and the Council has appointed Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd to deliver the scheme.

Traffic lights are required at the bridge area of Station Road for the duration of the scheme. This will reduce the highway to one lane – but no road closures are required and the traffic management is likely to cause minimal disruption.

Councillor Andrew Morgan, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Cabinet Member with responsibility for Highways, said: “This £230,000 investment for the works in Hirwaun, through #RCTinvest, is important to carry out repairs and future-proof a large bridge. The structure spans the River Cynon and supports an important highway access for local residents.

“This scheme is part of a £25.9m investment to maintain and improve Rhondda Cynon Taf’s road network in 2019/20, through the Highways Capital Programme – which follows a £23.6m investment in the service last year.

“An important part of this investment is to repair structures supporting our road network. In May 2019, river wall repairs got underway in Hopkinstown, while repairs to the Castell Ifor Bridge continue to make good progress. Work has also resumed on the Pontrhondda Bridge replacement in Llwynypia.

“Last year, a significant river wall construction was completed in Porth, along with retaining wall repairs at Penrhys Road, and bridge repairs at Sardis Road in Pontypridd, Cardiff Road in Aberaman and Llantrisant Road in Pontyclun.

“The Station Road scheme in Hirwaun will begin on June 17, and the traffic management required is anticipated to cause minimal disruption. I’d like to thank local residents and road users in advance for their cooperation.”
