Labour avoiding responsibility for not resolving the devolved issue of housing safety.

A written statement by a Labour minister in Cardiff Bay has drawn the ire of the Welsh Conservatives as the Welsh Government sought to blame Westminster for not resolving the devolved issue of housing safety.

It followed Shadow Minister for Housing Janet Finch-Saunders MS speaking out at the need for the Labour Government to take a tougher stance against home builders in Wales refusing to fix all unsafe tall buildings they have had a role in developing.

Her intervention was backed by campaign groups Welsh Cladiators and Ripped Off By Redrow.

Commenting on the update, Welsh Conservative Janet Finch-Saunders MS said:

“I am deeply concerned by the Minister’s comments. As housing is a devolved matter, it is the Labour Government who is directly responsible for housing in Wales.

“The petulant abdication of responsibility by the Minister is offensive to all those Labour have let down. Devolution cannot mean taking responsibility when ministers fancy it – it is their duty and the job for which they are more than well paid.

“Time and time again the Labour Government in Cardiff Bay has played politics with matters that affect ordinary working families in Wales, and now we see another minister avoiding taking responsibility or direct action.

“Labour need to stand up for the people of Wales and address this pressing issue rather than look to pass the buck.”
