Investment In Schools in RCT

Schools across the County Borough are set to benefit from a £7M investment in school buildings and facilities.

Cabinet will shortly consider the detail of the investment, which will see schools outside the Council’s ambitious 21st Century Schools Programme benefit from major enhancements too.

Primary, comprehensive and special schools will see a range of enhancement projects taking place through the designated Education Investment Programme to improve their premises for the benefit of the children’s education.

This ranges from upgrading kitchen facilities and toilets to carrying out electrical rewiring, upgrading fire alarms, replacing boilers, new roofs through to extensions and major buildings enhancements.

Further investment in this area has been made possible thanks to £2M additional investment announced by the Council for schools which will see facilities enhanced to 21st Century school standards.

Cllr Eudine Hanagan, Cabinet Member for Education and Lifelong Learning, said: “Delivering the best possible educational facilities for our children is a crucial element in helping them to achieve their potential, and we will continue to do all we can to improve and invest in our schools despite reductions to public sector funding.

“Our commitment is evidenced by the major capital investment in many of our schools in recent years.

“We continue to deliver modern, sustainable and inspiring buildings in which our young people can learn and give them the best possible chance in life.

“The Council is progressing ambitious 21st Century School proposals which has delivered over £90M investment to date, with eight new or modernised schools being delivered by the Council in recent years.

“This new capital investment will see the roll out of building enhancements to the same standard as we are delivering in newly created schools to existing school facilities across RCT.

“Examples include over £400k to upgrade science rooms and external facade of Bryn Celynnog Comprehensive School, an extension to Park Lane Special School and Abernant Primary School, upgrades to classrooms at Heol Y Celyn, Hendreforgan, Alaw, Llanharan and Penywaun Primary Schools, Ferndale Community School, YGG Pontsionnorton and YG Cymer.

“This is investment is yet another demonstration of our commitment to education and providing the best possible opportunities for our young people.”
