Gwynedd Council by-pass Welsh Labour as Cardiff Bay minister slam the brakes on road-building
Discontent between local and devolved government has been brought to the surface as Wales’ most nationalist council looks to Westminster for funds to construct a by-pass as the Labour Government’s road-building freeze approaches its first anniversary.
Following Labour’s decision to withdraw £14m worth of support for the Llanbedr bypass, Plaid Cymru-run Gwynedd Council is going to bid for funding from the UK Conservative Government for support.
Earlier this month, the Deputy Minister for Climate Change refused to give substantive answers to the Welsh Conservatives as to how much money had been spent on each of the roads currently on review.
Commenting on the news, Welsh Conservative and Shadow Transport Minister, Natasha Asghar MS said:
“Once again, Labour’s dogmatic approach to road-building is costing the people of Wales.
“I am glad that Gwynedd Council is able to apply for funding from the Conservative Government through the levelling-up fund as Labour slam the brakes.
“It shows just how poorly Labour serves Wales when its most nationalist council looks to Westminster rather than Cardiff Bay for support.
“Labour ministers need to abandon their ridiculous road-building freeze and acknowledge that workers and businesses in Wales need better transport infrastructure.”
