GMC clarifies no role in medical education places

This is a difficult and confusing time for hopeful students and medical schools.

In light of recent media reports, the General Medical Council has clarified its role in medical education.

Professor Colin Melville, Medical Director and Director for Education and Standards at the GMC said:

‘While it’s encouraging so many university applicants wish to study medicine, to help future patients, we know this will be a disappointing time for anyone who misses out on a place.

‘The GMC has no role in deciding which students are selected, or how many places are available to study, but we expect other organisations to take a fair and transparent approach to the allocation process.

‘We will continue to work with medical schools and their healthcare partners to ensure medical students are taught to our high standards and receive the skills and knowledge needed to practise safely as doctors in the UK.’
