Residents looking to get online at home can do so for less than £100, thanks to an innovative Rhondda Cynon Taf Council partnership.

And, for a limited time only, those who take advantage of the important digital inclusion scheme can enjoy a further five per cent discount on the cost of a computer.

Getonline@home is a Microsoft-backed campaign that allows residents to purchase internet-ready, refurbished personal computers from just £99.

The local promotion brings together the Council, Microsoft’s local PC refurbishment partner (Computer Recyclers in Penygraig) and RCT credit union Dragon Savers.

By working with Computer Recyclers, the Council is able to put to good use pre-loved personal computers, ensuring they are upgraded, refurbished and ready to connect to the internet for an affordable price.

The support offered by Dragon Savers allows its members to spread the financial cost of the equipment.

Cllr Joy Rosser, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Safer Communities, Libraries and Heritage, said: “More and more these days, people are choosing to access services and undertake personal business online.

“From using search engines to find the best deals on car insurance and energy packages, to online banking, shopping, requesting services, having a go at the Council’s budget simulator and more.

“The Council recognises this demand and has worked to deliver a mobile-friendly website which allows people in the county borough to manage as much of their business as they choose online.

“This includes paying Council Tax, managing accounts, reporting issues such as a faulty street light, finding their nearest services, joining consultation and applying for benefits or services.

“However, as well as adapting to reflect the growing demand for easy, efficient online services, the Council also recognises the cost of purchasing internet-ready computers could be a challenge for some residents, which is why it has worked innovatively with  partners to offer high-standard, high-spec refurbished computers at an affordable price.”
