Cwmclydach Development Trust – Leading the way in green energy

The Cwmclydach Development Trust, chaired since its inception by Karen Roberts, is leading the way when it comes to green energy in the area.

Karen, a candidate in the Council election on 4th May, says she is extremely proud of what the Trust has achieved.

"A few years ago a proposal was put forward by one of our enthusiastic Communities First officers that we should install a micro hydro generator in the area. Always willing to push the boundaries a bit, the Trust agreed and after a great deal of work by Phil Jenkins in particular, and a huge amount of red tape, we received a grant for £400,000 from the UK government to make it happen.

"The water intake is at the "top lake" in Clydach and a pipe then leads down the track of the river to the generator by the "bottom lake."

The scheme brings in vital funds that help keep the community centre, the nursery and other projects going.

"Clydach was at the centre of the coal mining industry, helping provide energy to the world. I am glad that we are still doing our little bit to ensure that we are once again part of the green energy movement."
