Coroners Office Opening in Pontypridd? Local councils are short of money?

The new South Wales Central Coroner’s Office and Courts have been officially opened in Pontypridd.

The Coroner’s Office and Courts were officially opened by the Chief Coroner of England and Wales, His Honour Judge, Mark Lucraft QC, along with the Mayors of Rhondda Cynon Taf, Bridgend, Vale of Glamorgan, Merthyr and Chairman of Powys.

The new South Wales Central Coroners Service is an amalgamation of the former Powys, Bridgend & Glamorgan Valleys Coroner Area and the Cardiff & Vale of Glamorgan Coroner Area.

The amalgamation of Coroner’s Areas is supported by the Ministry of Justice, and will ensure that those who are grieving do not face the additional stress of poor service and lengthy inquest delays.

Furthermore, this new arrangement will mean Coroners focussing full-time on their coronial duties, providing a more supportive and consistent service to families, as well as providing services in Courts housed onsite with modern equipment and specialised staff.

Councillor Maureen Webber, Deputy Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, with responsibility for the Coroner Service, said “It was an honour to have the Chief Coroner of England and Wales, His Honour Judge, Mark Lucraft QC attend to open the new South Wales Central Coroner’s Office and Courts in Pontypridd.

“When amalgamation of Coroners’ Areas was originally proposed, I know that there were some concerns, however, this is a perfect example in showing how Local Authorities can successfully deliver when working in partnership.

“It allows us to provide the public with a service that can better meet their needs and expectations, whilst delivering high quality and professional investigations at an extremely sensitive time for individuals, families and friends of the bereaved.”
