Construction of the Aberdare Bypass extension

The duelling of the A465 is well underway when completed it will be of benefit to many and hope to prevent the many accidents and loss of life that has happened on this infamous section of the Heads of the Valleys Road. The new section of the Aberdare bypass will ease traffic through Llwydcoed and the B4276. The Welsh Government and Cynon Valley, MS Vikki Howells should provide assurances secure funding is in place for the Aberdare bypass project to advance.

The leader of the council Andrew Morgan has said, “The Council remains committed to delivering the Cynon Gateway North to vastly improve connectivity between the upper Cynon Valley and the Heads of the Valleys”

As your contractor Redstart has carried out substantial surveys and drawings for the project, please can you provide a start date for the contact to begin?

I do believe Mr Morgan said previously on social media the bypass extension would be constructed at the same time as the duelling of the A465.

Is the contract out for tender and have you appointed a contractor?

A response from Rhondda Cynon Taf Council.

“Thank you for your interest in the Cynon Gateway North transportation project. As you correctly suggest, the appointed preliminary design consultant Redstart have over the course of the past 24 months undertaken a comprehensive programme of surveys and investigative works that have informed the current specimen design for the transportation project.”

“The completion of this specimen design has culminated with the submission of a planning application, submitted for consideration in February of 2021 to the Local Planning Authority. Following submission, consultation with key stakeholders such as NRW, Cadw, has been ongoing as RCTCBC works towards striking an effective ecological and environmental balance in line with the feedback received from the aforementioned stakeholders.”

“The consultations will be shortly concluded on these matters with the stakeholders.

The current programme is on track and aligns with the A465 dualling scheme in that the Cynon Gateway North would reach completion in parallel with completion of the new A465 roundabout at Croesbychan and the remaining length of dualling, by the A465 contractor. Following a positive outcome in terms of planning, the next stages will be to tender for a detailed design contractor and then subject to completion of all necessary statutory procedures and availability of finance, construction will commence.”
