Bwlch Mountain Road resurfacing during the Easter holiday
The Council will carry out necessary carriageway resurfacing work during the Easter holiday to future-proof Rhondda Cynon Taf’s section of the Bwlch Mountain route.
The work will take place over Easter to minimise disruption – beginning on Tuesday, April 3, and scheduled for completion on April 9. It will require a full road closure of Rhondda Cynon Taf’s section of the A4061 Bwlch-y-Clawdd Road – between the B4223 Pen-Twyn Road in Treorchy and Bridgend’s section of the A4061, just beyond the road’s junction with the A4107.
The scheme will include carriageway resurfacing and rock netting works, and the road will reopen by Tuesday, April 10.
An alternative route for motorists, from Bridgend’s side of the closure, is via the A4061 (Nant-y-Moel) to Blackmill, route A4093, route A4119, route A4058 to Treorchy and the A4061, to the opposite side of the closure. This route can be travelled in reverse order for motorists travelling in the opposite direction.
The existing access for pedestrians will be maintained during the road closure, along with access for emergency service vehicles.
Councillor Andrew Morgan, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Cabinet Member with responsibility for Highways, said: “The Council has scheduled this necessary resurfacing work on the Bwlch Mountain route over Easter to future-proof the road while minimising disruption for commuters. It follows recent significant investment in the Maerdy and Rhigos mountain routes, delivered by the Council in the past year through #RCTinvest.
“Thousands of motorists rely upon the three mountain routes each day, and the Council is taking a proactive approach to ensure they are maintained and improved. While resurfacing work might cause short-term disruption, this investment will see the road improved for the long-term benefit of users – which is currently being experienced in Maerdy and Rhigos.
“Investment in these larger schemes complements smaller projects carried out throughout the year, which make up the Council’s annual Highways improvement programme. In 2017/18, 19 surface treatments, 43 traditional surfacing schemes, 11 essential highway repairs, 21 footway works and 11 street lighting schemes have been completed across the County Borough.
“Through the ongoing £200m #RCTinvest programme, the Council continues to improve its Highways as a priority area for investment, and almost £20m was invested in Highway and Transportation schemes in 2017/18.”
The Council will work closely with contractors to ensure the Bwlch works are completed as quickly and efficiently as possible, and will communicate arrangements to re-open the road once the works are finished.
