A Bike for Christmas

Do you remember the Christmas or birthday you received the gift of a new bike?

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council has a number of “nearly-new” bicycles available to purchase at a massively reduced price this Christmas.

Thanks to the Rhys Cycle Cycle Centre, which is based in the grounds of Pontypridd High School, residents can recycle their old bikes and purchase reconditioned “like new” bikes for their loved ones.

Cycling is fun for all ages and can be something that residents can do as a family – and with bikes starting at just £15 there is no excuse not to get on your bike this Christmas!

There are bikes available for all ages, from 5+ to adults – did you know that a bike is still one of the most popular things that children (and a few dads) ask Father Christmas for, year on year?

The centre aims to re-cycle bicycles from across Rhondda Cynon Taf and bring them back to life by repainting, re-spoking, de-rusting and repairing them so that they are “nearly-new”. The bikes can then be sold to residents at a massively reduced cost.

The dedicated, purpose built centre is based in Pontypridd High School, where the scheme was initially piloted back in 2011 and has already proved a huge hit locally. The centre also boasts a specific area for cycle proficiency tests to be held, ensuring the safety of young cyclists across the County Borough.

Councillor Ann Crimmings, Cabinet Member for Environment, Leisure & Sport, said: “As a Council we are dedicated to ensuring that we recycle and reuse as much as we possibly can and work tirelessly to find innovative ways to divert waste from landfill – especially items that can reused to the delight of residents across the County Borough.

“On top of the Council’s innovative green projects, like the Rhys Cycle Cycle Centre the Council offers residents FREE weekly food waste, dry recycling and nappy recycling collections. The Council also boasts an award winning mattress recycling centre in Llwydcoed – all of this further demonstrates the Council’s commitment to providing a clean, green County Borough in which to live, work and visit.”
