Better Late Then Never on term-time holidays

Welsh Conservatives have welcomed Welsh government clarification on term-time holidays and labelled new guidance ‘better late than never’.

Labour’s Education Minister has written to local authorities and advised them that pupils should be given up to 10 days away.

Welsh Conservatives have long highlighted the confusion surrounding term-time holidays in Wales.

Shadow Education Minister, Angela Burns AM, said:

“Better late than never; this brings long-needed clarification to a system that made no sense whatsoever.

“Conflicting guidance from LEAs, regional education consortia and the Welsh government was confusing and led to inconsistent decisions.

“Head teachers know what’s best for their own pupils and I am extremely pleased to see power being placed in their hands.

“Labour has run the Welsh education system for 17 years and this worrying issue has been just one symptom of ongoing confusion, increasing red tape and deteriorating performance.”
