Bar staff from various premises in Cynon Valley came together to obtain the BIIAB Level 1 Award

Last week bar staff from various premises in Cynon came together to obtain the BIIAB Level 1 Award in Responsible Alcohol Retailing.

The free event was organised by South Wales Police and supported by RCT Council. Candidates from licensed premises across the Cynon area attended the course which provided bar staff with a clear understanding of the conditions under which licensed premises must operate and outlined good practice and information about the effects of alcohol.

The qualification enables candidates to understand the main points of licensing law as well as recognising the responsibilities associated with the sale of alcohol and understand their duties concerning under-age sales and serving people who are drunk.

PC Darran Lloyd said: “Achieving this qualification will improve the overall standards of premises, reduce crime and disorder and the other negative effects associated with alcohol.

“It also ensures that pubs, clubs and other licenced premises provide a safe and welcoming environment for customers and staff.”

The training was funded by the National SAB Miller/British Institute Inn keeping (BII) Scheme and was presented by Iain Wright.

Mr Wright added: “It was a good day and all attending seemed as though they wanted to be on the course and showed interest. The candidates on the day demonstrated they now have sound knowledge of their responsibilities in serving alcohol, in particular to underage and drunk people.”
